I'm a smoothie addict, no doubt about it. I love combining fruits, veggies, creamy yogurts, herbs, spices, you name it and I will try to turn it into a smoothie. A meal in a glass. Fast. Tasty. Efficient. Portable. Need I say more?
But I'm not a fan of icy cold smoothies. First they take waaayyy too long to drink because they are just too darn cold. Second I always wind up with little chunks of ice cube remnants which I don't like. And third, when those little chunks melt down while I'm waiting for my brain freeze to pass, they water down my smootie.
So I had to come up with a way to have a colder smoothie without constantly sending my brain cells into a cryogenic state or have a watered down version that I didn't like and wouldn't finish.
I needed a beverage that would freeze well and then breakdown well in my Bullet. I use milk, Kefir, or oat milk, or coconut milk in my smoothies. I have a DEADLY nut allergy so almond milks are not in my go-to list. I've tried freezing these beverages with little to no success.
And then it hit me like a coconut falling out of a tree! Coconut water! It's water. It's healthy as all get out. And it's WATER!!!! Did I mention that it's WATER!! It freezes perfectly. AND it breaks down so quickly and nicely in a blender of just about any kind. No little leftover chunks of icebergs.
One 15.9 oz container will give you 16 1-oz ice cubes, give or take a smidge. One cup has about 50 calories for all you counters. So that's 3 calories per cube.
BUT here's the real door prize people... coconut water ice cubes give you a bit of water and the added benefits of antioxidants, amino acids, enzymes, B-complex vitamins, vitamin C and minerals like iron, calcium, potassium, magnesium, manganese and zinc. And did I mention that it's WATER!!! Great way to up the old water intake a bit if you ask me.
So now I always have them in my freezer chillin' away waiting for the next smoothie. Now you can add as many as you like to your smoothies to get the perfect coldness and fluidity.
For those of you fellow smoothie aficionado's who use regular, boring, plain old water ice cubes, make the switch and see what you think!
