I could say that I am doing something crazy because Shaun T. told me to do so to celebrate this "crazy" 8th day of the dietbet, but this activity is something I've had planned since last month. I won't keep you waiting... Dark Dining. I've participated in a dark dining event, which is a meal in which you are blindfolded and basically eat with your hands.
Mindless Eating vs. Mindful Eating
You might have heard about mindless eating, the scarfing down of food... not chewing thoroughly or not paying attention to what or how much you are eating. Of course, you don't enjoy your food as much and it can lead to overeating. The opposite is mindful eating. According to US News, there benefits to mindful eating such as helping to prevent type 2 diabetes and decrease excessive snacking.
Some tips on mindful eating that are used:
- Take your first bite with your eyes closed- hello; with a blindfold you can't help but to do that. this allows you to actually experience the taste of your food
- Try to identify every ingredient in the meal- this is going to slow you down as you savor your food
- Take intermissions- when participating in dark dining... there are breaks to clear away old dishes, discuss how to eat the next course etc.
- Eat with your hands- improves digestion because the act of touching the food stimulates the stomach to know it is about to be fed; keeps your mouth from getting burnt; and in several studies it has been revealed that one enjoys food better when eaten with their hands.
This is not a cheat meal; I'm not a cheater. However, I do occasionally deserve to indulge in richer foods, fine wine, and awesome experiences with amazing friends. It is a treat, not an every day/week occurence. I will enjoy every bite and drink. I might even go for a walk when I get home, or not.
