Way Back Story - When we met, my husband was a big runner. He quit running due to some injuries and never got back into it. He can still run some if pressed, he just doesn't have the drive anymore.

Not So Way Back Story - Last year, to my utter amazement, I started taking up running and convinced my friend to as well. My kids (4 & 5 at the time) saw me running races and wanted to join in. So, I signed them up for the kids' run at an event that my friend and I were doing at the end of the sEason. When we finished our 5K, the kids lined up for their run. Let's just say that when a 4 year old asks, "Is that it?!?!?!?" after the race, it's pretty much a joke of an event.

I've also been wanting to do a mud run. I don't know if any of you have ever looked into one but they're EXPENSIVE. And I'm cheap.

Main Event - So, I'm idly scanning through a list of upcoming races in our area and spot one that catches my eye - Iowa Games Mud Run. The Iowa Games are basically like a mini-olympics for us wanna-be athletes. I thought - well, they can't be too pricey, can they??? I click on the link and it's like the choir is singing. Not only are they cheap ($30 for a 5K), they have a 1 mile version ($15) that people as young as 5 can sign up for! A real race for the kids, mud for me (and the kids) and cheap! It's the trifecta! Anyway, I sign all of us up, husband included.

My kids (5 & 6 now) can hike about 2.5 miles. So, the distance is no problem. The problems are 1) I have know idea how far they can run. 2) There are going to be lots and lots of people. This is going to be insane.

We've got a month-ish to train. We're going out for a family run tonight. We'll see how insane my cool idea is come bed time.
