At my age, dieting alone is not cutting it. During my first challenges, I reduced my calories greatly, but did not see the loss I would have seen even 10 years ago. It was very discouraging. It came down to the last week before weigh-ins and I still needed to lose almost 2 lbs. I was not going to lose $135! Walking wasn't enough; dieting wasn't enough; lifestyle changes weren't enough. My metabolism must be circling the drain along with a myriad of other age-related "wonderful" occurrences (ain't aging great!). I really do not like most exercising; I love hiking to the top of a beautiful mountain, not struggling through exercise DVDs, eyeing the clock the whole time. However, sadly, I do not live near any mountains. In desperation during the last week countdowns, I started back with Kettlebells, my favorite indoor exercise. Voila! Pants already looser, weight is coming off (albeit, still slowly) and I feel great! I have about 6 or 7 Kettlebell DVDs, collected over the past several years. I'm working my way through them (some have 4 DVDs in a set) to see what I like. Liking the workout is the only way I'll keep doing it. A small disclaimer: I couldn't walk up the stairs without hanging onto the rail after days 1 to 3 because my muscles were so sore, but no pain, no gain :). If you are struggling with slow weight loss, like me, I encourage you to pick an exercise you like so you will stick with it. Give Kettlebells a whirl--they burn tons of calories and most of the time, you don't realize it (until you wake up the next day and try to get out of the bed :)).
