How do you verify the weight loss?

For all official weigh-ins, you'll be prompted to submit your official starting weight. Our standard weigh-in process involves you submitting 2 photos: one of you standing on a scale in lightweight clothing (no shoes, hats, belts, watches, coats, or outerwear), and another of the scale’s readout with your weigh-in word written on a piece of paper.

What you'll need

  • A scale (preferably digital)
  • A digital camera or smartphone
  • A full-length mirror or someone to take your photo

From yours truly, a math, engineering, and business nerd who thinks numbers are fun:

$4.94 in profit x (66% x 5261)=$17152.96 divided out amongst the winners.

Returning our bets to us: $35 x (66% x 5261)=$121520.00

Paying the host: minimum of 5% of the pot but I'm guessing she made 10, but let's just say 5: $9206.75

DietBet's cut BEFORE paying overhead, even though I was stingy with the amount of money paid to the host and it's probably much less: $36259.25

In all likelihood, their expenses were probably something like $20k to host this game between labor, office space, insurance, more labor (app development, IT, payroll, accounting, referees, probably some temps this time of year because so many people are playing,) utility bills for their office, office supplies, taxes, the list goes on but ultimately running a business is horrifically expensive.

Potential "profit" which I'm guessing is actually less than this: $16259.25

Percentage of the profit: 8.8%, which is higher than my original estimate but still a very fair number.

Conclusion: Even if DietBet forfeited the potential profit from the dummy numbers I made up above (I don't know what their books look like so there's no way to say for sure) we would have made an additional...$5. There were a lot of players in this game and a lot of winners. Profits will only be high for the winners when there are a lot of losers, and since everyone is on the resolution bandwagon in January this is not that month.

Cass

There is no way their expenses are that high. They make a tremendous amount of these bets. Good for them. Great idea. I won't be playing anymore though.

@Cass if you look at WayBetter's website...they're based in New York City. They're a medium sized company running a business in one of the most expensive metropolitan areas in the world (and if you look at their careers page...they have openings in executive level positions that easily pay $250k plus per year and they have several open...which means they likely have others on payroll already.) Their expenses are likely absolutely that high, even with the number of games that they run. Like I said, can't see their books so I don't know for sure but given the facts...this is a pretty good round guesstimate. Your opinions are welcome, but I personally far more enjoy the positivity and everyone pointing out how much we gained from this game!
