  • I was hiking with friends this morning at a battlefield, temps in the mid80s. About 4 miles into the hike I started feeling sluggish and headache, just achy all over. I did a few hits of sea salt and was drinking water, but had not eaten yet for the day. Usually this distance and temperature would not be a problem, but today I was dragging, ended up skipping the last mile of the hike and getting a ride back to the start, was feeling light headed and exhausted, like might pass out. My Apple Watch says it was a high intensity workout, about 2 hours near 150 beats per minute. Have you had this issue on Keto too? This is one month since we started Keto, my second time on a hike in past 2 weeks that I seemed to run out of energy. Last time I had a cheese stick and felt a little better. This time I managed to eat half a cheese stick and was getting nauseous. How long did it take you to get fat adapted for workouts? Many folks seem to recommend exercises before breaking a fast, but seems to compromise some of my hikes and make it harder to predict my performance versus when not on Keto.

I did Keto a couple years ago and after a week or two I was able to hike like normal again and after two months I felt like I had my high school energy back. That being said I am no expert, but make sure you are replacing your electrolytes and eating enough. Also my experience was I would eat about 30 to 45 minutes before I would work out (or go hiking). And that worked for me.

Hang in there! It definitely gets better! Some people take longer than others to become fat adapted and what you’re going through right now is totally normal. Your body is crying for carbs and sugar! Don’t give in and know that once you are fully keto adapted you’ll have so much energy and clarity and feel 20 years younger and wonder why you didn’t do it sooner! Hang in there! Sounds like you’re doing awesome :)
