  • Week 8, Day 1. You'd think workouts the day after a carb binge would be easy. No such luck! I need these anaerobic workouts to burn off glycogen consumed during my once weekly carb cycling.

When on a "normal" Standard American Diet (SAD), a sustained caloric deficit usually results in catabolism of muscle. If the caloric deficit is sustained for some period of time, the body converts stored fat to ketones which are burned as energy. Fat is the "back-up" plan when glycogen and protein are scarce. The body has no "back-up" plan for when the fat runs out so the leptin and ghrelin levels drop slowing the rate at which we burn fat. https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/leptin-101#how-it-works While carb cycling frequencies vary, I prefer a once weekly (but always no more frequently than every 5 days) 6-8 hour carb binge to trick my body into thinking the "crisis" is over and to reset my ghrelin and leptin hormones. There's some weight gain due to retention of water associated with carb intake but after 3-5 days, I'm back to my pre-carb cycle weight with the next 2-4 days resulting in an additional weight loss of 2-4 lbs a week. The once weekly cycle can be difficult for those who REALLY like their carbs but it breaks up my week and gives me 1 night to eat some of my favorite carb rich foods I miss while on keto!

After having a bunch of carbs or sugar I'm always suuuuper sluggish! Great job burning it off and pushing through!
