I’ve only made the first round goal BUT in the last two days two different coworkers asked if I had lost weight! That was very helpful to hear it from other people. I know I need to do this for myself but a little external validation helps a bit

I am so frustrated, I was less than half a pound for my goal this month! So close!
Happy it doesn’t DQ me from the whole game. Onward!!

It won’t DQ you! You just won’t get the payout this round. Onward indeed!

I fully binged this weekend through last night. Scale is back up to almost starting weight. Going to refocus and work on not over restricting to prevent the binge!

Don’t give up! I have been seriously working on my relationship with food lately - have stopped labeling food “good” and “bad”, they shouldn’t have a morality value some are just more nutrient dense than others. I focus on fueling myself for workouts (staying high in protein and knowing fried foods and a lot of carbs lead to feeling like crap during them). Severe restriction of macronutrients and foods you love leads to binging. I’m so happy to say this shift in thought has been successful and I’ve had no binging in months. You can do it, give yourself some grace. Don’t let hiccups cause you to give up, your future self will thank you.

Malia M.

This is totally how I had to frame out my DietBet, because I’m a classic restricted and then major binger. I find that have 1 night (not full day) a week for a special meal is helpful and if I am craving something having something healthy and then 1-2 bites of it.

Anyone else have target goals with prizes for themselves?
I’m shy 9 pounds from hitting my first goal! 30 pounds lost it will be. My prize: cutting my hair. I haven’t cut it in over 2 years. I wanted it to grow to donate it in honor of my husband and him going through chemo for cancer. This will be my second time doing it. The reason for why waiting and doing it as a prize is to symbolize the weight off. I have very thick hair so getting it cut will feel lighter and free just like my body and the 30 pounds. The last prize will be another 30 pounds from that. The money I win from these challenges I will use to get a tattoo to again symbolize I can do it and I did do it. It helps motivate me. Anyone else doing this or something similar?
Have a great weekend!

Wow! That’s amazing!
I don’t have any goals that can compare—just excited to buy a new wardrobe

I plan to lose 30 lbs by Jan 1. (I started august 1 due to ongoing medical issues). When I hit that, I’m getting some new clothes - specifically some cute jeans. My next goal is to lose 50 lbs by next summer. When I make that goal, I am getting a professional glam photo shoot. Because I’ve always wanted one, and never felt “good” enough to do it.

  • I’ve been really focusing on strength training (I have lost 43lbs total this year) and seeing significantly more progress - both scale and non scale since starting this program. I can’t recommend strength training over cardio enough (and make sure you get your water intake each day - about half of your body weight in ounces if you can)

Be kind to yourself in this program. If you have a day you indulge, don’t get stuck on the food guilt loop! Get back to it the next day without guilt, it’s the best thing you can do for yourself in a long term goal like this

Been feeling pretty discouraged the last week recognizing I likely wouldn't make my goal. I still tried, but weighed in today having lost 2.3% instead of the required 3%.

I originally comforted myself with the knowledge that if I continue on this course, I will at least win rounds 4 and beyond. But I wanted to win them all, so I'm still disappointed.

The hardest part for me in this is how dedicated I have been to my weight loss this month. I have measured all my food and meticulously tracked my calories to ensure I would win. In some ways it's comforting to feel like I've done a good job -- "I guess this is just the fastest I can lose weight" as an excuse to dismiss accountability... it comes with a feeling of helplessness because I dont know what I could have done differently that isn't moving into unhealthy deprivation territory.

So today I got out a spreadsheet to really try to problem solve what went wrong. After some careful analysis and consideration (and some research), I realised I was overestimating the calories I burn doing hot yoga. I just used the default on my fitness pal but scientific research doesn't support those estimates. With that in mind, I actually did lose close to the amount that would be expected given what I've consumed and done... There were also a lot more days i went "just a bit over" that mattered more than I would have thought when combined with this (my calorie goal was actually set to try to lose 4% as a safety net).

I feel SO MUCH better now knowing what happened and how I can improve moving forward - dont be afraid to sit down with a critical eye at your behaviour/method to make a plan to do better if you haven't made your goal, even if you think you're doing everything right. Knowledge is power!

If you did make your goal -- congratulations!

I heartily endorse bothe “Time Restricted Eating” and not calculating exercise calories into my daily calorie total. Gary Taubes has said that “Calories in-Calories out” as the sole key to weight loss is tragically misleading because it assumes a physics-based system (energy in/energy out) versus reality which is we are complex biological systems. There are so many elements to our bodies’ metabolic systems that also change over time that I think you’ve hit on the one key that works, which is tracking your own personal data and then looking back at the data for the unvarnished truth about the story that data is telling. You’re doing great!!!!

What I love the most is that you didn't stop at "I don't know what I could have done differently". This is where most people stop and then end up quitting.

Didn't make my round 1 goal, but did loose a bit. I had started out strong and lost a few pounds, but that seems to put a false sense of accomplishment in my mind and I think, "Oh, I'm doing great, a little extra (fill in the blank) won't be a problem," or, "I can skip the walk and get straight to work, I'll go tomorrow." It's a pattern I have that I'm totally aware of yet don't fight back on my mental bargaining.

That being said, I already feel like I've made the right decision joining this group challenge because normally failing like this would cause me to turtle up, ignore the weigh in, and just think, "Well, if nothing's going to change, why fight it?" And treat my body like crap for a few days. But seeing everyone's posts, especially the ones about not quite making goals, made me feel not so alone in this constant struggle and to set my sights forward. I'm not a "sharer" and I would definitely file a post like this under "things I would never say out loud" but even though I missed the mark, I don't feel like being a turtle today because of this group. Good luck for the next round everyone!

Thank you! So glad you are committing to keep at it... I also have to conscientiously make that decision each day.

Yes! It is so important to encourage one another. We can do this, slow and steady. Just don't quit.

  • To be honest… as happy as I am, I was a little crushed this morning. I missed my goal by 2oz! It definitely sucks but it give me fuel to push that much harder for December. Here’s to kicking a** and taking names this month 💪. WE’VE GOT THIS!

Didn’t quite make my first goal (which I thought would be pretty easy - ha!). I guess I forgot how much I love eating ALLLL the Thanksgiving food for days - but am moving on and feeling motivated to kill it in round #2!
