Has anyone experienced the phenomenon of doing more exercise and gaining weight? I feel much more physically fit playing tennis for an hour almost every day but it looks like I have gained almost 2% (going the wrong direction for the bet). I wasn’t tracking as seriously so I will go back to that but it has been exhausting tracking everything I eat since Jan (I’ve been dieting since then). Thanks all!

I hear you. This round isn't going so well for me so far. I've been more diligent in drinking water, and doing exercise daily, but I think I'm going to have to go back to calorie counting. There are some calorie counting games starting Monday on WayBetter app.

Thanks all for the comraderie and great tips! I think one thing I’ve realized is that this journey may take longer than the bet and that is OK. Also I measured today and my inches are the same so maybe I gained muscle? Either way, I’m seeking to improve my figure and remain healthy so happy to just keep going and see improvements even if super slow

Anyone else notice how addictive sugar and carbs are??? İ made round 2 and have been mostly staying away from sugar, but bought ice cream and my cravings went through the roof for everything with carbs! 2 days later and I'm up a couple pounds! Good thing today is always the best day to get back on track!!!

Thanks Jose for the tips on controlling your sugar/carb intake!!!

Totally with everyone on the sweets! I’ve been “dieting” since Jan and my overall eating has improved a lot but sweet tooth still the same. Had been getting ice cream (a couple of weeks of heat advisories will do that) but starting to log all my food again tomorrow and likely no room for ice cream. I figure sometimes it’s good to have a break. Just not too often lol

I reached my round 1 goal! Better late than never and slowly but surely working toward round 2 (would be amazing if I made it by the deadline! Lol)

You got this and can do it. I had a slacker week and lost progress but watch your Calories and you can do it!!

kate

Woohoo congrats on the progress!

I am taking my engagement photos in 11 days! Excited because I have slowly made decent progress since the start of the year (down 7% body weight) but my progress did stall for the last 2-3 weeks as I was not sticking to my calorie budget. I am obsessed with chocolate and given that’s usually the reason I end up over my calorie budget I got rid of all of it. Here’s to hoping that I can see some real change in less than through weeks by cutting out food with no nutritional value!

  • Did you know that if you have Amazon Prime you have access to a lot of fitness videos on demand? I discovered Zumba videos today and had a fun sweat sesh. 😅

After my run (before breakfast and rehydrating) I weighed in at 233.4. This is between my round 3 and round 4 goals! I will definitely drink 3# of water, but seeing the mid/low 230s feels great!

Have you been making progress? If so, how have you progressed? If not, where do you need to put your focus (food? Exercise? Both?) And most importantly, what can we do to help keep you motivated?

As of today, I am 2 lbs away from my round 3 Goal! I am so excited, not to mention my knee pain is gone! I am going hiking right now!

I’m still at my round 1 goal amount. Can clean up nutrition a bit (I have everything prepped but give in to dessert cravings)

Really impressed by everyone’s dedication to exercise! I’ve been doing 30 minute exercises and only recently started 2 hour bike rides or other long stretches. Any tips for dealing with the increased hunger that comes with increased exercise without going over the same calorie budget?

It's OKAY to eat back some of your exercise calories. If you're ALREADY eating at a deficit, then increase physical activity, you're just making your deficit bigger. And if you exceed TOO MUCH of a deficit, you're basically just starting to cause your bodies RMR to slow down much faster...............and still be hungry! So for instance, if you're already in say a 500 calorie deficit for the day and you burn another 500 on top of that with exercise, eat back 250 calories. You'll STILL be in a 750 calorie defict overall.

Thanks Jose!

Congrats to everyone who achieved their goals! I was so close (1lb with 1 week to go), but then after a week (and my weekends) of working nonstop (and not getting paid for it because everyone on our job has paycuts they put in place due to Covid), I turned to a lot of emotional eating. Plus being in NYC where you can’t do anything is really taking a toll. I’ve mostly gotten back on track this week but now I am hungry all the time. And it seems like in the last week I gained almost 2 pounds (thought some of it may be water weight from my high calorie days but its been a few days and still there 😞 I’m feeling sad because I wonder if I didn’t make this weigh in and with my weight going up again can I make enough progress in time for the following month’s weigh in? Would love any support / advice you guys can share!

I'm in another transformer that is ending this month and had the same thoughts and self sabotage. But I made a decision that I needed to lose the weight, my health required it. It took me 3 rounds to win but I did it and am below for the final round. Yes, the winning my money back is great but I would gladly pay it for what I have lost! In transformers, if I don't make a round or 2 I don't worry about the money... it's a marathon. The end result is what matters. We stumble as we go but getting up and pushing through is key. You can do this! We all can!

Thanks everyone! What a great am supportive group!

One week left to lose one pound! I will say being so close to my first round goal keeps me more on track than just dieting without these check ins!

That’s awesome! I’m happy for you and have faith you’ll lose that pesky pound!

I am so discouraged. I have tracked for over 20 days straight. I have only gone over my calorie limit on one of those days. I have been doing so well, and somehow this week my weight jumped almost back to where I started this month at! What gives?
I started at 208, lost to 204, then this week I am back up to 207!!! Ughhhh.
(I’m not on my period or PMSing either....)

@Jose, I did know protein causes an insulin spike, but not as much as carbs. And yes, you do need insulin, however you don’t need it 6-8 times a day. With CICO, your metabolism recognizes “wow, I’m only getting 1200 calories a day, let me only burn 1400 today. And 1300 tomorrow, and 1200 after that, and 1100 the next day” (obviously not that dramatic, but for comprehensive reasons) your BMR will lower and lower. That’s why people Plateau, and then eventually gain it back and then some. This happened to me even when I moved to Germany, was hardly eating many calories but grazing, and biking and walking so many miles a day. And then the docs will say “because you’re lazy! It must be your fault!” Fasting windows are the way to go to avoid this. Highly recommend The Obesity code for a great read.

Jose B

@Kelsie Do you agree that you have to have calorie deficit to lose weight? And if you do, REGARDLESS of the deficit, your metabolic rate reduces anyway. And as weight goes DOWN, it reduces even more. That's just basic biology 101. I posted a thread awhile back on "plateuing" and how it's miscontrued. You should check it out. If people REGAIN weight, it's only because of one main reason.........calorie surplus. It still comes down to basic math. I do believe in fasting. Personally I only eat 2 times a day with snacks. I'm eating less than I did before which is why weight is consistently going back down.
