  • So much in life has changed since I began this weight loss journey back in February of 2020. Even though weight loss was the goal in mind, I also wanted to better myself in any way possible (which turned out to me mostly mental health.)

    In all honesty, the weight loss was the easier of the two. Of course it is hard work to lose weight, but that was a breeze compared to the mental stuff. I started going to therapy just before the pandemic started. I probably only saw my therapist once or twice in person before having to switch to zoom appointments.

    Body dysmorphia is something I self-diagnosed. I didn't mention it right away to my therapist, because I thought it was me just trying to self-sabotage my success. After finally mentioning it in one of my appointments, she verified I was correct at labeling my thoughts as that.

    We have been working on it over the last few months. The photo on the right is an "assignment" she made me do. About a month ago I bought a few summer dresses, then basically told myself I would never look good in them. I never even took them out of the shopping bags. After telling her this, she had me wear a dress all day (at home), just to get used to the feeling of it. She didn't *make* me take this picture, but I knew I should!

    I have 25-50 more pounds to go, but after seeing a side-by-side comparison, I feel much better with my progress I have made. Always take pictures, and remember.... If I can do it, so can you!

So last week was a challenge. My husband tested positive for covid, which threw my whole household into a tailspin. But, instead of eating my anxiety and stress, I found other, healthier ways to deal with it and didn't derail my progress so far. I'm exhausted and still stressed, but staying the course and doing my best. May not make this month's goal, but I still have 8 days, so we'll see. :)

I’m super shy to post... but here it goes. I started my journey in October when I had done nothing but lay on my couch at home when I wasn’t working (and when I went back to work in person none of my clothes fit). In addition my daughter had a guest speaker in her science class on diabetes and I was FOR SURE pre-diabetic... I had almost all the symptoms. I started by just walking a mile every single day. That turned into me actually getting on my Peloton (#runlalarun), and now I’m working out 4-5 days a week riding and doing strength classes. I am an educator (STEM Coordinator and Instructional Coach at a K-8) and am getting exhausted and feel so guilty that I’m not working out more. I’m beating myself up when I don’t. I think that’s a good sign because it shows motivation is in me... but I also need to not burn out. But I need to also celebrate myself: I am down 27 pounds, 21.7 which are fat pounds. I am losing inches and all my pants are actually getting to be too big. My resting heart rate has gone down from 71 to 59! I feel so much better (I’m still so exhausted but I think that’s teaching in COVID and being a mom??). I guess I wanted to post to celebrate my journey and because I just can’t stop beating myself up... I tell myself I should have worked out, I still look so fat, I’m not losing fast enough, I shouldn’t spend so much time meal prepping. I’m an asshole to myself. I need help... any advice?

I totally get it. I’ve tried to adopt a more positive mindset and seems to be getting me further. Each day I ask myself “what have I done for myself today”, and if I can list something then that’s fine and I don’t best myself up over a missed exercise.
If I can’t, then I treat my body to a workout, even if it’s short. You have to show up for yourself.

Sounds good. So, if we expect and factor-in plateaus, maybe they won't be so frustrating. We can know that our body is establishing a new, lower set-point weight and *that's* awesome! :D
