Hi everyone. I missed round 2 weigh in. I actually would have made the goal, as my husband of 23 years passed away on July 29th. I am slowly coming back to reality and a schedule. I should easily make my round 3 goal, as eating is sort of a forced thing right now. Hug the people you love tightly!

  • My wife and I used to go to Olive Garden a lot, in fact our first date was there. Ahh those were the days back when unlimited bread sticks sounded like a good thing! Her favorite was the Chicken Gnocchi Soup, this was before we were vegan of course. She decided to try to make a vegan version and it was great. think it is better than the one at Olive Garden! We are definitely adding this recipe to the binder!

    Note:
    1) We have tried this recipe with and without the Instant pot, I think it's the same, my wife likes it better in the regular pot.
    2) My wife did not use Butter or Oil per my request and it still came out amazing!

  • My mother-in-law expressed some concern on my kids not getting enough protein. It’s so great to have well-meaning people like her as an ally. This is not the first time this has come up, so rather than just brush her off, we checked it out. Turns out it’s crazy easy to get the RDA of protein it’s a lot lower than you might think and even lower for kids!
    “There is a nutrient, though, for which 97% of Americans are deficient. Now, that’s a problem nutrient. That’s something we really have to work on. Less than 3% of Americans get even the recommended minimum adequate intake of fiber. So, the question isn’t “Where do you get your protein?” but “Where do you get your fiber?” – Dr. Greger

    In that video, I learned some surprising things:
    1. “If you break it down by age and gender, after studying the diets of 12,761 Americans, the percentage of men between ages 14 and 50 getting the minimum adequate intake? ZERO!”
    2. “One problem is that most people have no idea what’s in their food; more than half of Americans think steak is a significant fiber source.”
    3. “Now, when closing the fiber gap, you’ll want to do it gradually, no more than about 5 extra grams of fiber a day each week, until you can work your way up.”

    This is some more info about Fiber summarized from “How not to diet” by Dr. Greger
    1. Fiber-rich foods can suppress appetite and reduce subsequent meal intake more than 10 hours later
    2. Fiber boosts metabolism because the body can't digest fiber—but it attempts to—burning calories in the process
    3. Fiber calories are never absorbed so they don’t really count as calories in, but they also trap sugars, fats, and starches too, so it’s like a calorie discount on the other food you eat too
    4. Fiber travels through the intestine to trigger the Ileal brake. When undigested calories are detected that far down your body thinks your completely full, lowering appetite

Vegan diets CAN be healthy. They can also be crap. There is no plant source that gives you a complete protein on its own. Quinoa comes closest, and combining rice and beans will do it. That said, I'm not a vegan or vegetarian. My body does not do well without animal protein. I don't know about forcing kids to be vegan, but I don't know your kids. A friend of mine who is vegetarian had one daughter that thrived on a meatless diet and another that absolutely did not do well. He fed that daughter meat. Hope your kids are happy and healthy!

Not going to win this round, but still going to call it a victory! Just getting back from a 2 week road trip, and while I didn’t lose any weight I also didn’t GAIN any weight. Chose not to stress about food but try to make the best choices possible given the location that day. Also made a point to still get some exercise each day. This bet is a long journey and will be back on track for August!

We can do the right things and still not lose weight. I would call going on vacay and not gaining a victory as well! I tend to really enjoy myself when I am vacationing. Kudos to you!

Man, this is getting tough. I am about 10 pounds from goal, and I did not start the month out well. Back on track this week, upping the intensity on workouts. Not sure I will make it this round.

  • So... Last night I burned a thousand calories on the bike :) This morning I had dropped a whole pound. This kind of workout really forces your metabolism to kick back into quick mode and burn the fat stores :) This is how I break plateaus. Granted I must be gaining alot of muscle due to the intensity and frequency of my workouts (5-6 days a week) which slows down the weight loss but I honestly don't care because I need this journey to be a fat loss, not just a weight loss. (this was power hour, 60 minutes of high resistance hill climbs, lots of standing on the bike - very muscular AND cardio)

Well done! As a long term cyclist, small comment! If you do these workouts regularly, 3>hrs/week your body will adapt, increase plasma volume and as you say increase muscle mass which can lead to weight increase. If it happens, don't worry you are not getting fatter, healthier if anything, but it can create some new types of plateau that can be frustrating. Also make sure to eat normally not to eat up the burned calories, ideally only add a small protein bar immediately after for sessions longer than 1hr :) When I am dietbeting, i always take my cycling down, doing 3-4 rides a week at 1500-2000 kcal burned makes one amazing at racing bikes but it isn't super helpful at losing weight, ironically! Good luck!

Thanks Karel! You are totally right, but I am ok with that type of plateau-ing if it means I am getting healthier I don't mind too much the scale not moving :). I also never eat all the burned calories! I generally eat 1200 per day from 7 am to 11 am and then fast until 7 am the next day. If I do workout heavily like this I only eat a small portion of the burned calories. This particular time I ate a handful of unsalted natural cashews and almonds (around 300 calories) and burned 1000. :)

Have you heard of set point theory? Its this idea that no matter what you do you will hit a plateau and your body will do everything it can to stop you from losening weight. And one of the things it can zap your energy to lower your BMR. This means no matter how few calories you eat you won't lose weight. The only way to make it through, its to give your body time. That's the theory anyway

Not everyone’s favorite thing to hear but I’ve heard in order to lower the adiposity set point one should eat unsexy foods for awhile. Think plain whole food without sauces.
