On Monday my Au pair from Argentina arrives! I’m so excited. We matched back in June and the stars have finally aligned for her arrival to become a reality.

Any ideas for what I can plan for meals for her first week in America? I am currently maintaining a low calorie diet, so I would prefer it be something I can enjoy, too, but I could accommodate a few days of splurging or altering my meal on high cal nights to work for me.

  • Gratitude is so important and can positively impact all areas of our lives.

    This is one of my favorite exercises I do in our Gratitude Attitude games on the WayBetter app. I wanted to also do it here, because a gratitude practice can also help us with our weight loss goals.

    Gratitude decreases stress and, in turn, stress responses like eating. It can also contribute to better sleep which helps with overall health. Starting the day with gratitude is a practice that will contribute to overall well-being, as well as establishing a habit that can then lead to establishing other great habits like goal setting, exercising, preparing healthy meals.

  • After last week, I was starting to think my metabolism was on fire and no amount of food was going to stop my weight loss! I decided to increase my calories to reduce my % of lean mass lost. Turns out my metabolism wasn’t on fire that much after all. An increase in calories above my BMR let to an increase in weight. Shocker, right? In the last week I gained 3.2 lbs back 1 pound being lean mass. This puts me a bit ahead of where I was before in terms of total body composition. A week isn’t long enough to draw any conclusions, and I’m not really interested in gaining weight during this bet, so I will probably reduce my calorie goal again.

Stephany I think in the bigger picture the calories out side of my equation is higher than represented by my BMR. The body is a mystery though because increasing my calories a bit led to weight gain so who knows, maybe it was all water. My scale measures body fat and lean mass via bioimpedance

I didn’t even notice your BMR to be honest. The graph looks like chaos if you don’t know how to read it. The body is so confusing! Hahah I envy those who have figured out how to get to their optimal body and have kept it that way. I got there once, but it wasn’t the best way (a work situation led to more physical activity and less eating in general) and I definitely maintain it. So here we are. Lol good luck! I didn’t joking DB to make money, but to keep myself accountable. That being said, I don’t want to give you guys my money either!

  • Every vegan has a story about how or why they went vegan. For me (and my family) it happened overnight with little planning. I didn’t know what to eat. Desperate for recipes and general advice on living vegan I turned to YouTube and found Dr John McDougal. He runs a 12-day program where people are taught how to eat, live, and thrive on a WFPB diet. He said one of the favorites for people attending his programs is the Split pea soup. He also said it is so nutritious you could live on just that for the rest of your life. This split pea soup was the first WFPB recipe I made. And we loved it. As we really started to transition away from processed foods and refined oils, a lot of our recipes have been taken out of the binder, but this recipe is one of the few that has stayed with us through all of it.

    1. I use 3 TBS of salt
    2. I skip the Garlic, Parsley, Bay leaves, Dry mustard, Smoked paprika, white pepper, tomato, and cilantro because I can’t taste the difference and it simplifies the recipe.
    3. Sometimes we use brown rice instead of potato
    4. This is better the next day and when it gets cold it gets thick like mashed potatoes. I like that, my wife doesn’t.
    5. We double the carrots, onions, and celery

Edit- I'm not vegan any more but lived it for many years even as a raw vegan which is insanely strict lol but have predominantly lived a more vegetarian/veganish lifestyle. Since 2007. Waaaaay less dairy n meats in my diet overall, even went years without egg. that type of mostly no animal product will never change. U can't take away all u see and learn. The vegan lifestyle is hands down the healthiest. China Study Book is great evidence for that. Longest most respected study. Hopefully one day I can go vegan again and stay there, it truly was the best I've ever felt. I just miss cheese and a burger now and then :( lol but there are some great veggie burger and chicken substitutes out there these days. But it's hard for me to look at all that weird processed vegan food and think hmm this is healthier than a organic free range no antibiotic chicken breast? Lol I'm not a huge fan at all of the vegan substitutes . It's all alot of weird processed ingredients and soy and if it's not organic, definitely full of gmos and pesticides..
That's why when I was a vegan I was like a purest vegan lol . Just real veggies n fruits. No substitute foods I didn't buy the bagged vegan crap. But that was hard longterm to sustain.

I’m so mad at myself. I thought tomorrow was the last weigh in day. I may or may not have made it, but I had to weigh in tonight instead. I always weigh 3-5 pounds more at night. Probably because I drink so much water during the day. So I obviously lost this round. I should have not joined another transformer knowing I was going on vacation either. Live and learn I guess. 😢

Made my goal for round 1 and am so proud of myself! This last week I have had bronchitis and have not been able to work out. I adjusted my calories for this in mind and really stuck with it. First time I've been really feeling like I can prioritize and make these goals.

If you have been consistently losing weight week by week give ur body a rest day, after your weigh-in . Increase your calories by 10% and don't workout just take a rest day. Do it 1 day to 3 days depending on how many pounds u dropped so far. Let ur body know ur not dying and not starving lol and that everything is really ok 😂 ur body will thank u and fix any hormonal issues it maybe going thru that u have no idea about yet( usually ur body will give u a clue at a plateau, of ok I'm done. I reject this plan now lol) by trying to avoid more weight loss coming sooner or later, that phase will come. But Try to combat that early on before it hits. By doing this now, and ur body will actually give u more pounds to drop in the coming weeks; verses holding on to them for dear life.

Every several weeks I have a high calorie(increase 10%) day or 2 in a row and no 'real workout' for 3 days in a row. and firmly believe in balanced diet of pro, carb,and fat every meal to keep my body and organs happy and hormones happy(I'll stay active but no weight training and dedicated days of specifics during those days) This is all for the sake of trying to stop my body from entering a total freak out zone.

I love my treat day after I make my goal! I started DB back in 2018 and lost about 40 lbs. I've had some medical issues the past couple of years, so I'm back up again, but I'm back to feeling better - yay! So time to shed this extra person I'm carrying around! LOL. The treat days at the end of the month are so important. If I didn't have that to look forward to, I doubt I could stick to it!

  • Still at it with calorie counting. After my last post I became very interested in how I am losing weight so quickly. I mean you guys know my strategies come from “How not to diet” by Michael Greger, M.D. FACLM. According to the 3,500 calories per pound rule, I would need a deficit of 28,700 to lose 8.2 lbs, some how I was able to do it with 5,793. I lost 3 lbs of lean mass which seems like a bit much, so I might look into either decreasing my calorie deficit or adding weight to my work outs which I was planning on doing in September anyway.

Jen, lean mass is calculated directly by the renpho scale. Body fat is calculated by (weight) × (body fat %)/100 or weight-lean mass-bone mass.
