Hey just a question. The weight in is tomorrow right? I just got a message that i only have 24h left?

Molly G.

Yep, weigh in starts in ~24 hrs. So all day Sunday and Monday you should be able to submit your weight.

kate

Yeah I got these notifications too and was wondering the same thing! Maybe it means 24h until it starts? Cuz it still says "submit unofficial" weigh in for me.

  • This is... weirdly emotional... I did this diet bet with month to month payments because I was SURE I would fail and drop out. But here I am, surpassing my goal. Thanks to all for help in the motivation department 😊🙌

TIP OF THE WEEKEND: Vacations and time away strategies to help reduce overindulging too much- We all take time away at some point from everyday life and it's usually a vacation when a lot of people come back heavier. It's to be expected even if you are diligent. I've been on several cruises and because the food is endless, it's not hard to see why people can come off even just a 4-day cruise, 10lbs heavier.
So some strategies I try to employ and advise to my clients: KEEP EXERCISING. The cruises I went on all had gyms. I was in there at 6 am every morning for at least an hour. Let's face it, your family and significant other are still likely sleeping from the previous nights' fiascos, so you're NOT losing time with them. On the ship I would also walk the decks stairs for everything.
When you go to eat, try to eat vegetables in bulk before eating everything else. The more you fill yourself up with fibrous vegetables, the less room there is for high calorie pastas and desserts.
Keep alcohol to a minimum. This is a hard one for many, but one of the worst things you can do is eat a lot, then pound alcohol and go to sleep. Basically everything you've consumed won't get burned off because alcohol needs to be metabolized first before any other energy source is used.
And lastly, try not to hang around the food areas. It's so much easier to be tempted if you're hanging around the buffet area all day.
Hopefully when you plan your next vacation, you plan how to keep weight gain to a minimal as well.

I’m a cruise lover. I also love the ships’ gym over looking the water. I always take the stairs because who wants to wait for an elevator? Also another tip is to plan active excursions. I love to pick excursions that involve moving my body.

Molly G.

This was perfect timing for today. I'm having a staycation with some visitors. Our normal get togethers have an overabundance of indulgent foods. I'm worried I'm going to go off the rails but maybe keeping my exercise routine will help me remember not to undo all my good progress!
Thanks!

  • If anyone is interested in doing a challenge with me, this is what I have planned for September.

You can make it as hard or easy as you want. You can break up the skips throughout the day and even jump without a rope. You can also make it harder by doing one legged jumps or double unders. Whatever you like. Who’s in?

Wondering if it’s just me or others. I won both round 1 and 2. And received an alert saying that and confirming winnings. But those winnings are not credited to my account. So, my points are running low, as they keep charging $35 every month but not crediting the winnings! I sent DietBet an email, hope they get back soon!

STEPS!!!!
1. Do you track your steps?
1a. What do you track with?
2. What is your daily goal?
3. How many days (out of 30) did you hit your goal last month (June)
4. For the days you didnt hit your goal, what stopped you?
5. What tricks do you have for getting in steps?

For me.
1. I am obsessive. I track religiously
1a. I use Samsung health on my phone and smartwatch
2. 17,000/day goal. I know I can do more, but on rest days, I try not to over do it.
3. I hit my goal 26 out of 30 days in june
4. 2 days were due to leg injury, 2 days were after a 22 mile run. Needed time to recover. I missed them all by 1000-4000 steps. So not a complete lack of steps, just reduced
5. I walk/run first thing in the morning. Shooting for 8k-10k steps before I start work. I take the dog for a few walks a day. If I drive somewhere, I park further away than I need. And I uses a Variable Heigh Desk, so I can stand/pace during long calls.

  • I use a Garmin watch for tracking daily. With garmin, if you make the goal it increases for the next day, my current daily goal is 15,980. I had to go back and look but in June I made goal 29/30 days. The day I missed, I forgot about it and fell asleep 3 steps short of goal ??????? (picture for proof) ... tricks for getting steps: its been hard since working from home. I’ve started walking to Starbucks instead of driving (2500 steps) I try to do a quick walk around lunch time, and run or walk in the evening.

Jodi G.

1. Fitbit
2. 10,000 steps
3. Sadly only 10/30 days. :flushed: (Had no idea I was THAT bad this month. I usually have no problem meeting my goal.)
4. It’s been hot, so spending time swimming/paddle boarding. Can’t wear my fit bit. (... and maybe been lazier than I thought?)
5. Usually if I haven’t met my goal by 7 pm, I go on a walk outside with my husband or get in the treadmill and watch TV.)

TIP OF THE DAY: Aspartame and artificial sweeteners- this is a much-debated subject amongst Fitness professionals all the time and I thought it be good to show you what science actually thinks. A friend of mine (who happens to be a biochemical engineer) wrote this for MyFitnessPal a few years ago breaking down how aspartame is constructed and how it reacts in the general population. https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/1308408/why-aspartame-isnt-scary/p1
As to artificial sweeteners, they are the MOST STUDIED additive done by many independent organizations. Some give you pseudoscience as well as opinions but stick with the ones that give you PEER-REVIEWED EVIDENCE.
So some of the misconceptions are:

It raises insulin just like sugar- FALSE. If it actually did, then it wouldn't be suggested as an alternative drink stated by the Americans Diabetic Association or other diabetic organizations.

The body doesn't recognize the artificial sweetener, so it causes you to absorb more calories from food or drink- FALSE. All artificial sweeteners (and food and drink included) are bond chemically at the molecular level. Digestion breaks everything down to it's simplest form and what it can digest it does and what it can't it disregards and flushes it out of the body. Fiber is a good example. If people are GAINING weight while drinking diet drinks, it's because they associate the diet drink with "giving more room" for calories.

It causes cancer- FALSE. There are some studies that show high doses of artificial sweeteners cause cancer in rats. But that's not ever been replicated in humans. In one of those studies, they were feeding rats the equivalent of drinking a case or more of diet soda a day. Well it's not that hard to figure out that an overdose of ANYTHING to the body will disrupt some function.

Based on a lot of good evidence, artificial sweeteners are safe to use in moderation. If you have any questions on this, feel free to ask.

Going to go open up a Coke Zero right now! Oh, or maybe a DDP! Choices!

When I cut fake sugars like this from my regular intake, normal foods tasted better - sweeter, richer - more fulfilling. Ex tons of crystal light, felt pretty addicting.
Whatever makes people feel the best, is what I’d suggest for people.

For this diet bet I've started to track calories and meal plan around healthy options. It's been going pretty well, albeit with cravings, but I'm on the fence about having "cheat days" once in a while where I don't hold myself to my calorie goal. What do you guys do? To cheat or not to cheat?

My dietician made a good point, she suggested planning for the cheat meal but more importantly, plan the next day- like everyone is saying, it can snowball quickly but if you have a good recovery plan, a meal won’t make you gain actual fat (just retain water likely)

Cristy C

Treats not cheats ;)

  • I'm so incredibly disappointed ... this was supposed to get me through work, until a late lunch. I guess I'm just having peanut butter. Hopefully this doesn't lead to me binging later because I waited too long to eat. 😔
