The only time I have ever really succeeded at losing and keeping weight off was when I was conscious of everything that went in my mouth, and I was only conscious of that if I tracked it all religiously. I had a rule - I can eat whatever I wanted, as long as I stayed within my calorie/protein etc goals for the day- and splurges were okay if over the week I still had my goal deficit, and that meant it had to be something I could track. Was a pain sometimes, but as soon as I started getting lazy and not tracking, relying on 'memory' that I am within cooey of limits, I started putting the weight back on

That is a great rule! It keeps you honest and it doest get easier the longer you do it. Like anything, you need to make it a habit.
