Weight: 145.6

Dietbet goal weight: 145.3

Gah! Just Gah! I have until tomorrow to submit my weight in my dietbet and I am so, so, so damn close. This is killing me. I will be so annoyed with my body if it doesn’t listen to me for once and just do what I tell it! I was UNDER my goal weight this weekend. Stupid inconsistent body… Ahem. So, let me tell you what I’m trying to do in these last few hours before I must submit my weight to the dietbet authorities for authorization.

Time Old Tricks

So, one way I motivate myself while working out is to watch my crap reality shows on TV. One of the shows from the BBC is called The Diets That Time Forgot. It compares 3 diets to eachother in a non-competiitive “experiment”. Three dieters are put on the Banting diet from the Victorian era, the Chew Chew diet from the Edwardian Era, and the Lulu diet from the 1920’s.

Banting Diet – The Banting diet is basically Atkins with a little more alcohol thrown in. The portions are also tightly controlled to 4 or 6 ounces of meat per meal. I don’t really drink, and I am already on the Atkins diet – following it exactly as written, thank you :-)

Chew Chew Diet – This diet is from the Edwardian Era. Apparently, you can eat anything you want, but you have to chew your food exactly 32 times, then, let the food in your mouth drip down your throat and spit out whatever is left in your mouth. Now, during the show on the very first night, the 3 slimmers placed on the Edwardian diet revolted and refused to not swallow their food and refused to spit out what was left in their mouths. This was a very interesting turn of events as an American TV viewer, as Reality shows commonly make contestants do ridiculous things in the name of a little cash – and these British dieters refused to play ball. Of course, this show was not a competition. There was no weekly elimination – so the dieters weren’t going nuts with Last Chance Workouts. There were simply doing their best to lose weight and maintain their dignity. This experiment only lasted a month, but I would have liked to have seen a longer term experiment—like 3 or 4 months so we could see what happens once water weight is gone.

LuLu Diet – This diet was from the 1920’s and was considered the first calorie controlled diet of its kind. The diet consisted of 1200 calories per day, and while in this time period there are many ways to eat 1200 calories and not feel too deprived, thanks to the processed food industry, the unlucky dieters placed on this diet basically ate a lot of celery and lettuce. On their first day, their breakfast was two apples.

So, I don’t want to spoil it for you, but the most surprising results were from the chew chew dieters. Even having modified their diet after only one day, and being able to eat anything they wanted, these dieters still surprised everyone and lost a crazy amount of weight. This was partially due to the fact that the meal times were only something like an hour or so, and the contestants couldn’t really finish all of their food because they had to chew every single mouthful of food 32 times. Well, I’m already sort of doing the Banting diet – so why not combine the two? We’ll see how this works out for me. The final weigh in my scale tomorrow morning, either I’ve won or I haven’t, will tell. For more on the benefits of chewing your food http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19515731

Cold showers

This is just an update from my last blog. I still hate the cold shower thing. However, I am not sure why, but I seem to be getting a little used to it, or I have been building up my mental fortitude. Either way, I was able to stand under the freezing cold water for a solid minute this morning. Oddly enough, when I’ve been getting out of the shower, I haven’t felt the need to quick go hide in big old towels or drape myself in the covers. My body heats me back up quite quickly, which, actually, I think is the point of the whole thing. Forcing my body’s internal heating systems to work, hopefully producing more calorie burning brown fat, and burning calories to warm me back up after being exposed to cold temperatures. Since I decided to try the cold shower route, a day hasn’t gone by that I haven’t taken a cold shower. In fact, yesterday, I took one in the evening as well as one in the morning. My husband also gave the cold shower a try. he thought he was standing under cold water, then I turned it down further to where I have it. He lasted about 5 seconds. I’m not going to lie: That made me feel pretty damn good Ok everyone, Final push! Think Thin thoughts!!!
