Do you think that deep down he could feel threatened or intimidated by your willingness to change? Does he have areas in HIS life that you/'society' deem worth changing? More than likely, that's the case - and this is when people tend to lash out and bully, or become sarcastic. I know I've been guilty of it before! I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that he is slightly JEALOUS of the fact that you have decided to make this change - either because he isn't bold enough to do so, or he's afraid that you're making a change without him. Maybe try to involve him in your efforts to change - take him with you on hikes/activities (without making a big deal of it), sign up for a vegetarian/healthy cooking class together - then perhaps he won't feel so intimidated, or that he is being replaced by your "good" habits! And if none of that works in reaffirming him, he obviously has some deeper issues he needs to deal with on his own... before your relationship can be truly 'healthy'!
