That actually makes a lot of sense. There are plenty of studies out there, proving how having a dog or cat around helps people. Fuzzy-warm animals like cats and dogs help with mental peace and even improve people's recovery from physical issues. Contact as a form of interaction and friendly, positive feedback might be even more important for someone, who is around people all day - with all the stress and challenges that come with that. Would it be an option to get a couple of cats or dogs? That might make a difference. I would really get two of them, though, because animals are social too and they don't thrive, if they are locked up without company all day, until the owner comes home. Think about it, maybe this can be a simple way to get some positive non-challenging interaction into your life?

Michael - Then maybe you need to do something 'selfish'. Instead of volunteering more, think about what would feel good for you. You already give a lot through your job alone. Nurture your soul, make sure you re-charge the batteries. 'Selfish' can be a good thing, because it keeps you strong, so you can keep helping others. Maybe try a new hobby or sport or even meditation/yoga? Something new that keeps you from burning yourself out. It could be as easy as trying an outreach class, something accessible.
