Wow I can really relate to this! I crave routine too because I feel in control! And I can relate to eating the cookies every time you passed them even though you were not hungry. What you call mouth hunger I call sugar craving! Even though I know I am not hungry every fiber of my being craves a cookie or something sweet. This is absolutely the hardest part of eating better for me, putting down the sugary food with no nutritional value and empty calories. But damn it sure tastes good! It's so tied into emotional eating for me. For me I still have a hard time having just one- like you could with the M&M's. Routine (and good sleep) helps me feel in control and better able to ward off the 'mouth hunger'! Thanks!
