My son is a competitive gymnast and I've always used the excuse of meets to allow myself to splurge on calories I don't need, usually on food I don't even enjoy. I'm realizing there is no excuse to not eat well and plan accordingly. A couple tips I've learned:

  • Skip the hotel buffet at breakfast and head for your nearest Panera or Starbucks instead. Not the most fab breakfast but you can still come out at less than 300 calories and avoid the 'bought in bulk, cheap food, semi stale' type fare loaded in fat and calories that hotels usually serve.
  • Just about everywhere has a whole foods market. Stop by and load up on healthy snacks to pack for the day. If buying the night before, ready to eat fruits and veg can be placed in sandwich bags and layered in a hotel ice bucket to stay fresh. These can be complimented with things like kind bars and evolution cold pressed juices available at Starbucks. Still may not be the best of the best but calorie and quality wise way better than any concession stand.

Just looking at the heavy muffins, dipping dots and pre popped buckets of greasy popcorn at a meet today just made me realize traveling is no excuse to not make a best effort to put the best I can into my body no matter what is going on!
