Starting the DietBet challenge felt a bit like Opening Day at the ballpark: sparkling and new and hopeful.  It's an opportunity to test your mettle, to adjust strategies based on the results of your initial performance.  You hope for the best, are somewhat expecting the worst, and if you end up somewhere in the middle, you're starting things pretty well!

I knew the family picnic was going to be a challenge yesterday but I think, overall, I've started my season strongly!  I stuck with only water and passed on the sodas.  Skipped the chips and dip entirely.  Also skipped the brownies.  I did have cheese on my hamburger but I bypassed the bun and wrapped it in lettuce instead.

Temptation wasn't entirely avoided.  I did go back for seconds on both the macaroni salad (my auntie makes one with black olives, dill pickles, and hardboiled eggs and it's my favoritest ever) and the fruit salad.  I didn't hike as much as I had anticipated; the heat and the sun drove me to the shade much of the time and even then, I did not escape sunburn.  But in a social occasion among family members that love to eat, I managed to stand my ground with only a couple wiggles.  I feel ready for the rest of the season.
