Go Paula, that is awesome! My best advice is, don't try anything new on race day. Try out all your nutrition out first. I usually eat a rice cake with peanut butter in the morning, when i get up, or on my way to the race. I eat a banana in transition, about 30 minutes before the race starts. I usually do a gel on the bike, and take a gel on the run, just in case. Sometime I take Sport Beans, cuz i like those too. There are all kinds of gels out there, so find one that you can stomach. I like one called 2nd Surge because its not really thick and easy to digest. Drink electrolyte drinks in the days before the race, that really helps! Let me know if you have ANY questions.. I have been doing triathlons for 20 years!!!

Hey! I just signed up for my first Olympic distance triathlon. Any advice you can give a first timer would be greatly appreciated! (all advice is welcomed, but specifically advice around nutrition/fueling during the race would be super!)

A couple of years ago I went to "tri camp" with a local group, and there was a presentation from a nutritionist who said that during vigorous exercise we can only absorb a couple hundred calories per hour. I already used electrolytes for long bike rides, but I tried adding something called carbo pro to my water. It's mostly tasteless long carbohydrate molecules that are easy to absorb and don't upset your stomach. Did it make me a more competitive cyclist? I don't know. I still need to put a little bit of something solid in my stomach for a long, hard ride. Lots of folks seem to have trouble taking in calories to sustain them for endurance.

Hey! I just read an article about hydrating when cycling - specifically doing a century ride. I thought of you. Here is the link. You may know all the info already.....

Hi Sandy, I just saw that you're going to do the Hotter-n-Hell Hundred, and I thought I'd say hi. I'm a cyclist, too. I just returned from RAGBRAI the week before last. It's more like a moving party than a speed ride... Good luck with your diet bet. -Sarah

Hey! So glad to see you back in the game! How was the fitness camp? Do you have any more triathlons schedule for the rest of the season? I ordered some TYR tri shorts per your recommendation. I loved the chamois/padding, but ended up returning them as I did not feel that they were $80 better than the two pairs I already have at home :( I will keep looking for that perfect pair!

My favorites are by "skirt sports" - definitely more fashion than technical, but it's what I feel comfortable in and for me, that's half the battle. I wish they had more compression and a thicker chamois, but at least they do not ride up or cut me off into sausage like rolls. You are probably better off sticking to your TYR shorts.

Good for you! I am supposed to do an Olympic in September too - my very first Olympic distance ever! But my tri partner is injured & potentially can't do it & I don't like doing Tri's by myself so we'll have to see if it happens for me this year. I've got a sprint in 2 weeks. You are ahead of the game having done Oly distance before. You will do awesome!

Hey Sandy! It's Paula here. I'm hoping you'll join me in the next game "Fitness Warriors 3". I would love to have a fellow triathlete in the game as we gear up for races!

Hey! Quick question for you. What brand/style of tri shorts do you have? I've got two pair, neither of which I am pleased with. Before I drop some bucks on my third pair, I want to get some opinions.

Sandy R.

I love ZOOT and TYR brands of Tri shorts. I don't even buy cycling shorts anymore, I just wear the Tri shorts for cycling too!
