First blog post here...so bear with me.

This weekend I heard a story in NPR about college friends who'd stayed in touch over the years - living half a world apart AND pre-facebook, even. Imagine that!

I can't remember their names, so let's call them Christine (I believe she was in Japan) and Vanessa (Australia?). Christine was diagnosed with breast cancer, and when Vanessa heard of it she was devastated and at a loss. She wanted to DO something.

She'd never run before, really, wasn't a runner - but for some reason got it into her head that she'd run for Christine. By this time social media was a thing, so she would post her runs with the hashtag OUTRUNCANCER. She vowed to run a 5k every day that Christine endured treatment, and started that very day. She expected to be able to stick to it a month, maybe 6 weeks...whatever. She did it for years. She outran cancer for years. Until she was diagnosed. Now they flip flopped and Christine is running every day for Vanessa. Now. This very day. Christint also continues to run.

Somehow this story really stuck with me. Maybe it's because I'm of the age where I've seen friends fight this fight, some have won, several have lost. Some are on their second fight. The strength they possess leaves me speechless.

Today, June 19, 2017, is the day I start outrunning. I'll run for you. If you can endure immense pain, stress, and uncertainty, I can certainly run for you. I'm not a runner. I don't know how long it'll last. I don't tend to make goals. But I will say this: let me know if I can outrun for you, and why. Having said those three sentences up there, I'm throwing them out. Because, today, I am a runner. It'll last as long as I'm about to put one foot in front of the other. Therein lies my goal. Will I run 5k every day? Nope. Not yet. Maybe someday.

But first: a call to the chiropractor. :-)

(This has also inspired me to create my first DietBet challenge. Dog Days DietBet starts July 15.)

Fight the good fight, whatever your fight may be. Give it your all. Exit your comfort zone. And always: peace.
