I am a former athlete, and I love to play sports...but I hate competition.

It's true. Every year, I watch the Superbowl, March Madness, the World Series, all of it. As soon as the last whistle blows, or the final buzzer blares, I turn the TV off. Why? Because I can't stand to see the tears of the losing team. Imagine working so hard and the victory literally being so close you can smell it--knowing that there are two sets of t-shirts printed, two sets of confetti ready to fall, two headlines written for tomorrow's morning paper--and yet, only one team will prevail. It's heartbreaking.

I know, because I've been there.

And now, after my glory days are long gone, I actually hate competition. Even friendly competition. A well meaning friend who is also a dietbet-er invited me to a side bet. I was all for it, at first, but it quickly devolved and I had hurt feelings ( of course) because I realized--competition doesn't motivate me. But I am also a people pleaser, so I wanted to engage with my friend and be supportive for them, and so I tried to compromise, make it do-able for all of us. But, that didn't work. He needs competition, lives for it. I can't.

I've figured out that it's easier to lose weight (or do anything, really) once you know what you know about yourself. For instance, I know that competition doesn't motivate me. Why? Because I automatically think I'm going to lose and I get ready to lose my money and do whatever thing the other person wants. The truth is, I'd probably do whatever they wanted--if they asked. We didn't need to bet on it. LOL.

I thrive on support and encouragement. I know that. I come from a collectivist culture and I would prefer to work with people toward a common goal, rather than go all out for myself and to beat someone else. Got to the gym with me, tell me to keep it up---that's what I need.

It's always helpful when you can voice that to your friends and family. When people know what you need, they are more likely to give it to you! And most of all, do what works for you!

I really appreciate all of the support and encouragement I've received from all of you dietbet-ers! It's truly amazing! It's made the difference!
