I played soccer for 20 years, and would still play today had I not torn my ACL.

In 2006 I had 2 knee surgeries to repair it, and never played soccer again. After a ton of physical therapy I was finally walking again, but most other activities caused me pain. By the end of the year I had put on about 20 lbs. I simply wasn't able to be active. The following year I got married, and added a few more pounds. I didn't realize it at the time, but that injury really created a path in my life that I was required to take.

I had never struggled with my weight, so I didn't know where to start. I joined Weight Watchers, and learned so much about nutrition. The program also taught me the importance of tracking my food and exercise. I was able to drop about 12 of my 30 lbs. it was great! The problem was that I was still struggling to find an activity that didn't hurt my knee. Running was my favorite, but my body no longer approved. I ended up just getting used to my new way of life.

I have been stuck in the same place for 5 years, not gaining but not losing either. I cook healthy meals and go for a lot of walks. It's fairly routine. I'm happy, but very aware of those last lingering pounds. That could have been the end of my story, but it wasn't. Who would have guessed that I would have had to take a literal journey in order to truly understand the importance of moving forward and making progress.

In July I took a trip to Mexico to do surfing camp with my friends. We did yoga every morning after breakfast, and something just clicked! It wasn't an instant obsession though. The first couple of days were hard, but I started to realize that getting up early to start my day with yoga is the key to my fitness challenges!

It is a great way to start the day with focus, clarity and purpose. It calms your energy, and helps with flexibility and strength. My knee is feeling better, and for the first time in a long time I am feel like I'm getting stronger! If you're struggling to find your place in the fitness world, are overcoming an injury, or are just looking for something new - give yoga a chance. Try a few different types to see which you like. It's a great workout and might help you get to where you want to be. I've been doing it 4 - 5 times a week since early July. I have finally figured out what it means to enjoy the journey. I look forward to my classes and focus less on my end goals. The outcomes (weight loss) will happen since I'm enjoying the process of getting stronger.

I'm so excited to add this element to my journey, and look forward to learning from others!
