Yesterday I posted that a suit jacket that I wear infrequently (every three months or so) buttoned easily and I was so pleased when I remembered that the last few times I'd worn it I hadn't buttoned it at all because it was so tight. This was a lovely little NSV, but to me it was even more than that.
(Despite what I'm about to write in the next sentence, I'm not one of those girls who has planned their wedding since I was a preteen, but...)
I've wanted to wear a blazer jacket for my wedding ever since I first saw Madonna portray Eva Peron in the movie version of Evita. She looks so polished and so powerful. I'm not knocking women who want to look feminine or wispy or princessy on their big day, honestly. But that is not me. If I showed up in Tahoe in September in a modern fashionable sleeveless mermaid style dress my family and friends would think that I'd been kidnapped and dressed at gunpoint. I have never worn something like that in my life, and likely never will.
So when I casually started a Pinterest board for my wedding musings, it had a lot of white blazers, some equestrian riding coats, things like that. And my sister, who is a professional costume designer and seamstress, politely pointed out that some of the things I was posting really only look good on a very specific body type (which is her sweet way of saying they were all skinny models and I am literally obese...thanks, sis!).
Now, anyone who has watched an obscene amount of What Not to Wear knows that jackets are generally very slimming and flattering on a variety of body types. But for a wedding outfit? That is a slightly more sensitive dressing task.
And I've always had a rather square shaped body. There's very little differentiation between my ribs, waist and hips. And when I gain weight, I gain it around my middle and back. So one of my goals for my wedding is to create more than just an illusion of an hourglass type shape, I'd actually like there to be some actual hourglass there! So I need to lose weight around my midsection, and guess what? I am! Slowly but surely. The proof was in the jacket!
