Last night was one of those times that we older folks seem to suffer through with some regularity. I went to bed around 9:30 and promptly drifted off to sleep. I was awakened by a thought. Where does the weight go and how does a body get rid of it. I slowly closed my eyes hoping for a quick return to sleep and the next thought popped up. I'll bet that is an easy one to answer with the Google. But I was too lazy to get up, find my phone, and do a simple web search. "Tomorrow." I muttered to myseld.

Then I began to form theories. Maybe as I lose weight the body changes the fat into urine and I dump it that way? That didn't seem right to my fogged brain. What if it gets converted like solid waste and I poop it out. That couldn't be right either. When I am losing weight I am not "productive" enough to account for all those pounds. Hmmmm...

By then my eyes were open and I was wide awake. I rolled over and looked at the clock. Damn! 3:30AM. I will never get back to sleep with this little project bouncing around the back of my brain. So I crawled out from under the warm covers, avoided kicking a sleeping dog, and deftly stepped over the sleeping 6 year old. (Forgot about the grandkid, didn't you? We have him on an inflatable bed at the end of out own bed as a practical matter. He won't sleep in the basement room and I refuse to clear out the office. The plan is that he is here only until school finishes and I am not going to make it easier for anyone to plead for an extension.)

I went into my "too tiny to be an adequate bedroom" office and proceeded to pull up the search tool. It turns out that unyil recently nobody else had spent much time on the subject. Maybe we thought that is where 2.5Kg dumbell plates come from. Maybe we thought it was as mysterious as gaining the weight, you know, it just appears and disappears at will? But no, the truth is that pounds of weight are converted into water and carbon dioxide in a ratio of 16% water and 84% carbon dioxide and we expel it through our lungs. Please, don't take my word for it. You could look it up.

Now you can sleep soundly and not have to repeat my error...on this subject anyway.
