I had to have surgery last year. Although it wasn't due to weight, that may have contributed. My resolution this year is to rehabilitate my body post-surgery.

It's tough - I've been a 'runner up' in two of my 3 diet bets and it is tough when you know you can get there, but I try to hang on to the fact that I am still losing. Remember you've lost over 7% of your body weight already, which is fantastic. It may take a little longer than you'd hope to adjust to medication, but as long as you don't give up you will get there... You've just gone the scenic route for a while ;-)

If your work offers a meal plan, I think it's completely reasonable for you to work within that rather than taking the time/energy of packing. Portion control and making good choices are the major obstacles that you outlined, so work on tackling those! You could make a rule that you only have dessert on Wednesdays or odd numbered days or something--it sounds like "never" is not reasonable, so work with what you can stick to. A portion control option might be to have a small container (like a half cup sized) that you can put anything in you want at a meal -- anything! bread! mac and cheese! cake! -- but the rest of the meal has to be veggies or salad or lean protein, etc. so you always get a treat, but you don't ruin the meal. You're on the right track to focus on calories now, you just need to build good habits until they become second nature. :)

YAY!!! Congratulations MiceandMakeup!!! You look great!!! Girl, it just goes to show you that hard work DEFINITELY PAYS OFF!!! :-) I'm an emotional eater too, but I've gotten much better since I joined DietBet. Having amazing support from our DietBetter family during my struggles is what has helped me overcome the urge to eat during trying times. I'm happy to hear your boyfriend has been more supportive during your weight loss journey. It really makes a difference when your love has your back!!! Now that you have reached your goal, get your eat on mamacita!!! Have A Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year!!! :-)

Sounds like you're making great progress even if it doesn't show up as a "win" in the competition. You're doing great, kick it up and I'm sure you can catch back up to the goal! Good luck on the 5k!

Miceandmakeup, I understand where you're coming from. I know we're here to lose weight, but I love losing inches more than pounds. I'd rather see the physical changes on my body than a number on the scale. Don't get me wrong; I want the scale to move too, but since I've noticed that my body is changing & I'm getting smaller, I'm on a NATURAL HIGH & FEEL LIKE I'M ON CLOUD 9!!! THAT'S A BEAUTIFUL FEELING!!! That means I'm doing something right!!! You're gonna reach your ultimate goal too!!! I'm rooting for you!!! You got this!!! :-)

Visceral fat is such a killer. I didn't know until recently that some ethnicities are more prone to it, but it explains a lot about my family health history. I don't think my mom ever got a good accurate body fat test done, but it definitely might help explain why she had such terrible heart disease at a size 00, she must have had tons of visceral fat. Everyone in my family is/was apple-shaped, except for my brother, who is basically the male version of 00 (skin and bone, I think maybe a 26" waist), but he's only 25 so he may still develop a belly later. Both my parents died really awful deaths, and it's really been a motivating factor for me, as well as my own sharply reclining health. My mom had her first heart attack at 44 (but maybe younger, the doctors thought she may have had mini-attacks before that and didn't realize) and I don't want that to be me. I was never anywhere near as skinny as her, nor anywhere near as active. Though on the plus side, my life is a lot less stressful than hers was.I'm still hoping I can eventually bring my body fat down to 25%, but I can see now that it's going to be very very difficult and I may need to be on the edge of underweight, or really hardcore get into weightlifting, or both. I've really been bummed out that I'm still over 40%, but I figure skinny-fat's still gotta be better than obese. I'm definitely not giving up though. I guess I'm just an impatient person, sometimes I need to remind myself of how far I've come and tha

Thanks for sharing your notes and observances. Fascinating! I have a question about the studies of caloric restriction and longer/healthier lives in lab animals. The reports I saw compared animals that were raised one way (low calorie) or the other (unrestricted or just higher calorie). Have they noticed changes in length of life when animals were raised first one way and then changed to the other? I guess I want to know if it makes a real difference if you switch to eating less when you are already middle aged? Has a person already done irreparable damage?
