Excellent point.... While the fat seems to dissipate slower around your midsection it is only because that is where it is more highly concentrated. The areas of your body where fat is thinner will show progress quicker like your face and chest. Keep up the great work and as the fat is replaced with muscle your metabolism will greatly increase to help feed the muscle and soon you will be seeing great results in those areas that seem to slowly shrink!!

Thanks for filling in the missing explanation I've been looking for. I never did understand why my body looked the way that it did losing fat!

Yes, the simple way to explain it is if you were to take a doll and lay it in an aquarium on its back and fill the tank with water until the water covers the entire doll you would no longer see the doll above the water. The water is the fat that surrounds your body and the doll is your body structure. As you drain the aquarium (exercise) and lose water (fat) parts of the doll will start showing above the water. While the water is draining equally across the entire tank, you will start to see the features first that were least covered with water (Fat) like the face, chest, and toes. Same with your body. The areas covered in the least amount of fat will be quicker to show improvement. Most people think you can spot train by doing abdominal exercises to reduce belly fat. While you will tone up that area, your body loses fat equally across its entire surface.
