What's your way to help avoid eating too much at a Super Bowl party? I'm planning on enjoying my Wings, dip, and adult beverages but also planning on drinking lots of water.

I'm not going! Not a fan of these teams. But for real, I recommend having the veggie crudite. You can kind of snack unlimited on carrots, cucumber, etc. Also, allow yourself to have what you want, but be mindful of what that actually is (e.g. calorie counting, even if loosely.) When you say, "it's a cheat day!" you might have 4000 calories at the party, whereas if you say, "I'm going to enjoy myself today but pay attention to what I'm doing," you will have 1000-2000 calories instead.

All good suggestions, thank you!

  • At the end of Round 1 our bonus prize winners were announced. Did you see it?

We had 2 winners of a Vitamix Blender - Trevor J and RonjaRaeubertochter! Give them a big congrats!

Let's talk a little bit about our favorite tools in the kitchen for healthy eating.

I'm not fortunate enough to have a Vitamix (those lucky ducks!) but I do use our toaster oven/air fryer and the Crockpot all the time for cooking easy, healthy meals. I also have some meal prep containers so I can portion out the leftovers from healthy meals for lunches or to freeze for easy meals when I don't have time to plan. Last, the most beneficial would probably be my stash of measuring cups and food scale - that is a HUGE one for correct portion control.

Share your kitchen must-haves to help on this journey!

Learning to make more use of my pressure cooker & crock pot! I love my air fryer, too, but we were gifted it when it was just my husband and me. So it’s just a small basket one, Now, we’re a family of 5 and definitely want/need a larger, updated one! It’s been on my wishlist for a while, now!

Why do I lack willpower at the end of the day? I had a very long busy day and when I got home I wanted to “treat myself”. Typically this means ordering takeout and eating a lot. I wish I knew other ways to relax and to treat myself :(

Hot shower with candle light and a cold glass of water or electrolyte drink. I like the hot/cold contrast, it’s like the opposite of drinking hot chocolate after sledding. Then I wrap myself up in a big fluffy towel, not the ones I use for normal shower. I have added a square or two of dark chocolate to this ritual on occasion. It probably sounds really weird but I love it!

Lani T.

It's very common. You're using willpower and mental energy all day and you're depleted by the end if the day. You'll have to figure out what non-food treats you actually like (also consider ways to keep busy like doing a puzzle or some kind of craft) and figure out your triggers (e.g. turning on Netflix after dinner) and come up with strategies to deal with that (pre-package your Netflix snack or drink something non-alcoholic but fancy).

You could also find easy supermarket substitute for the kind of take out you usually get (even pre-made burgers and fries from the supermarket will be fewer calories than a take out version), or find some ultra low effort recipes you like like crockpot/instant pot recipes. Soups, chilis, and other similar things can be made ahead of time and frozen. If you portion them in glass containers you can just pop them in the microwave. There are also a lot of good frozen meal options and if you add veggies (can be done from frozen too) then it's filling enough.

Oh, and consider planning in a fancy treat each week. Not a box of stale oreos from the pantry, but a nice slice of something or a savory pastry from that fancy bakery. Plan it and look forward to it. This can give you more willpower to resist when you know that you have permission to have some fun food later in the week. The permission is the key.

I'm feeling down on myself and so "fat". I did make goal weight for round 1 but have gained since. Today I am going to write down my meals for the next five days ...and get off my ass and exercise. Sunday is the superbowl...maybe a "cheat" day...Go Niners.

I have shifted my mindset around "cheat" days. That language is very negative and feels like license to go crazy off the rails with my eating. Instead, I've started implementing purposeful "refeed" days, where I go a bit above maintenance in a planned/controlled way. Makes me feel in control while also giving me a needed break from my deficit. :)

I’ve gained since weigh in because Aunt Flo showed.. just trying maintain right now and get back on track when the week is over

What is your go to healthy breakfast?

For me it is about ease: a glass of 1% milk and a granola bar. Prep time is minimal, I can eat it in about 3 minutes easily, and it’s about 325 calories (I’m 280lbs so that is decent calorie breakfast for me).

TBF, I also eat a banana between breakfast and lunch at my desk. In total I’m hitting three food groups and exerting minimal effort. I’ve been doing this for about five years now.

Raw oatmeal, fruit, yogurt, milk.

  • Day 22: I haven't posted in a few days because I've very frustrated with my progress. I've been doing things the right way but after a good week of working out and staying in a calorie debt, I only lost .6lbs. My trainer suggests that this might be due to my increased workout efforts. I certainly hope that's the case. Unfortunately, it means I may not hit my DietBet for the January single month game. It does put me in a win for my 6 months "transformation" game, if I remain here through the end of the month. I'm hoping I can pull out a miracle this last week.

    ???????-----------------------???????
    Today's healthy habits:
    *Went to the gym x2
    *Tracked food
    *Stayed on calorie target
    *Ate a good breakfast
    *Journaled my gratitude
*Checked in with my DietBet group
*Tried some new healthy food options
*Cleaned up the last of the Xmas stuff

Lots and lots of water. When starting a new workout routine and upping water intake I've always noticed a very slow progression the first few weeks but then all of the sudden there's a big drop in the scale. Give your body the time to adjust and don't let the scale be the only motivator.

Jess Lee

Maybe lifting heavier at gym and upping the calories. Huge breakfast, light dinner. Lots and lots of water. Sometimes you’ll see a huge drop in the scale out of nowhere. Keep going!

  • What an inspiring group!! Some of you are off to an incredible start!

I've seen some of you ask about your weigh-in goals and / or losing too much weight. The exact breakdowns are in our Make the New Year Magic Transformer FAQs, but I want to put your mind at ease about a few things.

First, your goals are all set already based off your initial weigh-in. They will not change during this game. If you lose more this month, you're that far ahead for your Round 2 goal. To check your monthly goals click the Round Info button by your Round 1 progress on desktop, and All to the right of the Rounds at the top of the app.

Second, you would have to be experiencing some very unhealthy weight loss to be disqualified during a round. Unless you experience an illness, in which case you can reach out to support@dietbet.com, losing 12% of your starting weight during one round is unlikely. See the breakdown for each round here

Third, there is a difference between our prizes for this game (awarded monthly to anyone active in this game, regardless of weigh-ins or membership) and Weekly Membership Prizes (awarded weekly to Members who have completed the weekly progress weigh-in by Wednesday of each week). Find more information here.

How do you feel about your weight loss so far?
    A) I've had a large loss already and it feels great!
    B) Slow and steady, I'm feeling good about my pace
    C) I'm just getting started
    D) I haven't seen a loss yet, but I'm doing the right things!
    E) I'm struggling to get started
    F) I haven't even looked at a scale yet
    G) Other - tell us about it!

I’m feeling generally all over achy from two weeks of workouts. I am being very careful not to go too hard too fast but it is just two weeks of doing something vs. 6 months of doing absolutely nothing. BUT, I still got on the treadmill this morning, not as far or as fast as I wanted, but I’m happy with myself for doing something! Not giving up this time.

Me too! And what I do is not even that much - 20 minutes on the treadmill at 2.0. I made the commitment and I’m sticking to it though the little devil on my shoulder is in my ear making excuses all the time.

Great job! Drink lots of water, that will help with the soreness.

Made some delicious chicken chili. 5 of 6 kids decided not to eat it. More work lunches for me, I guess! Also shoveled a lot of snow this week. Hopefully my efforts help!

lol I did Turkey chili last night and only 1 didn’t like it!

The hardest part of eating healthy and station on track is having to make multiple meals. :weary: it can be a little discouraging
